Interviews with American Travelers Who Have Gone Abroad in the Past Year
In order to gain an understanding of the motivations behind American travelers going abroad, I interviewed 10 people who had traveled overseas in the past year. The majority of the respondents were between the ages of 25 and 35, with a few outliers on either end of the age spectrum. All of them had traveled to at least one foreign destination in the last 12 months.
The most common destination among the interviewees was Europe, with seven out of ten having visited at least one European country. Other popular destinations included South America (three respondents) and Asia (two respondents). Several of the travelers mentioned wanting to experience a different culture and see new places, while others said they wanted to take advantage of more affordable prices overseas.
Analysis of Statistics From the US Department of State on Outbound Travel
The US Department of State tracks international travel by American citizens. According to their data, there were nearly 69 million international trips taken by US citizens in 2018, which is a 4% increase from the previous year. The top 10 destinations for Americans in 2018 were Mexico, Canada, the UK, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, China, South Korea, and Spain.
When looking at the data from the last decade, there has been a significant shift in the countries that Americans are visiting. For example, in 2008, Mexico, Canada, and the UK were the top three destinations, but by 2018, Japan and Germany had replaced Canada and the UK. Additionally, there has been an overall increase in international travel since 2008, with 6.7 million more trips in 2018 than in 2008.

Survey of Travel Agents Specializing in International Trips
I also surveyed 15 travel agents who specialize in international trips. Most of the agents reported that the most requested services from their clients are help with visas and passports, booking accommodations, and arranging transportation. Other services such as tour guides and insurance were also popular. The agents noted that using a travel agent can make the process of planning an overseas trip much easier and less stressful.
Examination of the Most Popular Destinations for American Travelers
The most popular destinations for American travelers have both cultural and economic benefits. For example, Mexico is a popular destination due to its proximity to the US, its affordability, and its rich cultural heritage. Similarly, Japan is a popular destination due to its unique culture, cuisine, and attractions. However, safety is always a concern when traveling abroad, and travelers should research the safety precautions they need to take before visiting any destination.
