I did a search and could not find an answer to this one, I saw how the AOD was banged into a 63 roundbody will I have these same issues for my 64 2dr hardtop? I have NO engine in there now so this will be a fresh install. I have a MII front end set up and have not even considered headers yet. any help and advice will be much appreciated. the AOD will be a newer one btw

I'm placing an AOD in my 65. I'm doing two modifications. The first one is a must, you have to notch out the crossmember to allow the speedo cable access to bend in to the tranny. The second one I'm doing is making the crossover member narrower to allow adujust ment to the tranny angle to rear end without riding against the frame. There are discussion within the group about this.

While I have read many posts on here about beating clearance into '63's to fit an AOD, I was able to leave the hammers in the bottom drawer when I installed mine. It was a complete bolt-in using Ron Morris front mounts and a Dark Horse Performance (Renton, WA) rear mount. I used an adapting u-joint allowing the use of the original uncut drive shaft. I now have close to 40k miles on it with zero problems. The speedo cable was a tight fit, but required no modification. I would think that your chassis would have slightly more room than mine.

I'm certain that the tunnel will have to be modified to get the trans high enough to be at a natural phased angle. With a stock front suspension, you can use the aforementioned aftermarket engine mount kit which can lower the engine to a lower than factory position, establishing the important driveline angle with the AOD trans, which mounts lower in the tunnel than a C4 because of its' size.

The monkey wrench in the system here is the M-II front end, and its' heavy welded-in crossmember. You will have to use a Fox body double sump oil pan to clear the X-member, and that mounts the front of the engine a little bit higher than factory because the steering rack will only allow it to go so low. So the combination of the higher in front and lower in back angle of the drivetrain will lead to a nasty vibration at freeway speeds, as well as look funny in the engine bay. To do this right, you will need to cut the tunnel out, set the engine/trans in place, make the mounts to the correct angle (bottom of AOD trans pan should be parallel with rocker panels) and then make the mods to the tunnel to raise it up to clear the trans. I've seen this exact swap in a '63 Comet, and that is what the owner had to do to make everything happy with his EFI 5.0/AOD/Mustang II setup.

My opinion is, the more work you do your self on your Falcon and the harder the problems that you figuire out and over come, the prouder you are when someone walks by and says" How'd you do that?". My two cents! I also like to solve problems and make things work together that aren't suppose to. I'm kind sick in that way. Although it took someone else to tell me how to make a square hole from a round one. Others helping let's you know that others have gone thru the same problems. You'll make it work!!

You'll be fine. Just take your time and you'll be in 4th gear in no time.

Read, ask questions (like you are) and accept that you'll see some issues along the way. Everything can be solved.

Did the swap and loved it.
